Brenner Dies. Herb Brenner, chairman of Amarr Garage Doors, died of lung cancer on Feb. 23, 1994, at the age of 64. Update: Herb’s son, Richard, who was then the president of Amarr, became Amarr’s CEO in 2002. Jeff Mick is now Amarr’s president.

Burns Named NAGDM President. In January 1994, Howard Burns, president of Windsor Door, succeeded Clopay’s Bill Sachs as the president of the National Association of Garage Door Manufacturers (NAGDM).
Update: In 1996, NAGDM merged with the Door Operator and Remote Controls Manufacturers Association (DORCMA) to form DASMA. Howard Burns retired in 2003 and now lives in Nashville.

Cornell Promotes Andrew Cornell. Cornell Iron Works promoted Andrew Cornell to marketing manager. He had been northeast regional sales manager.
Update: Cornell became the president of Cornell in 1997 after his father, Keen, retired.

DODA Convention to Minneapolis. The annual convention of the Door & Operator Dealers Association (DODA) was held in Minneapolis, June 16-18, 1994. The event included nine workshops.
Update: The 2004 IDA Expo in Las Vegas offered 33 workshops.

Krawczyk Joins Stanley. In early 1994, Stanley Door Systems hired Stephen Krawczyk as product manager for garage doors.
Update: Krawczyk is now the general manager of Hörmann USA in Vonore, Tenn. Since 1994, Stanley Door was bought by Whistler, then by Innovative Home Products. Garage door operations were discontinued in 2000.

McAlear Named President. Mike McAlear was named president of Service Spring of Toledo in early 1994, succeeding his father, Pat McAlear. Mike’s grandfather, Clarence Veigel, founded the company in 1962.
Update: Mike McAlear is still president and was named Northeast Ohio Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003.

Richard Karn Becomes Wayne-Dalton Spokesman. Richard Karn, known as Al Borland in the hit TV show "Home Improvement," signed a five-year contract to be the official spokesman for Wayne-Dalton.
Update: After a successful eight-year partnership, Wayne-Dalton and Karn parted ways. Karn is now the host of the game show, "Family Feud."

Wayne-Dalton Acquires Frantz and Challenger. In early 1994, Wayne-Dalton Corp. acquired the assets of Challenger, a manufacturer of garage door openers and accessories in Bound Brook, N.J. In mid-1994, Wayne-Dalton completed the acquisition of Frantz Building Products of Sterling, Ill.
