Install Hoods Properly

Hoods and housings on rolling fire doors have several important functions. Besides preventing flames from passing through the header opening, they also keep the door square and prevent debris from obstructing the movement of the curtain.

If a fire door hood is not properly installed, the fire door may not close automatically or properly during a fire.

Here are some key points to remember when installing a hood for a rolling fire door.

1. Be sure the metal hood and housing are tightly secured to the brackets and wall.
2. Don’t assume one manufacturer’s instructions for a particular door are the same for another door. In all cases, the manufacturer’s instructions are by far the most important ones to follow.
3. Don’t use lead or plastic anchors.
4. Intermediate support brackets are important for smooth operation. If supplied, install them.
5. Check to make sure there is no contact between the curtain and the hood, or between the curtain and the hood fasteners.
6. Perform a final check to insure that the hood, supports, covers/shields, flame baffle, and fascia/back hood have all been installed and installed properly.

NFPA 80, a publication of the National Fire Protection Association, contains more complete information on proper installation of hoods.
