What is 24 Gauge, Anyway?

The members of DASMA recognize that equating actual steel thickness (e.g. in inches) to a steel gauge (e.g. 24 gauge) can be quite confusing. The problem is accentuated when an actual steel thickness is identified as a different gauge thickness in different building products.

The DASMA Steel Gauge Chart below was created by DASMA’s Commercial & Residential Garage Door Technical Committee to give minimum steel thicknesses in inches for steel gauges ranging from 10 to 30. Bare, unpainted surfaces without galvanizing, as well as common galvanizing weights, are accounted for in the table. The chart is most applicable to the steel sheeting used in garage door sections.

The DASMA Steel Gauge Chart is based on AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) references and tolerances.
